Dhoni best captain in the world: Chappell
Posted on 22:30 by Maria Scott
Exactly four years ago, Greg Chappell had severed his ties with the Indian cricket team following a disastrous World Cup campaign that saw Rahul Dravid's team crashing out in the first round. Even though he has kept his own counsel and went about restructuring Cricket Australia's Centre of Excellence, the former India coach remains a much-disliked man in Indian cricket.
The hard-nosed Australian, often referred to as the "God of the on-side" for his majestic drives, has never been able to figure out why his name evokes negative emotions in a country where cricket is followed with religious fervor, when he harbors none. By his own admission, the 62-year-old Greg carries no emotional baggage of his 22-month stint during which Indian cricket tasted unprecedented success as well as bitter failures.
Currently, Greg is a full-time Australian selector. He has his hands full as Australia tries to rebuild the side with a view to regaining its numero uno status in world cricket. Yet, he follows and admires Indian cricket.
His critics may find it hard to believe, but Greg maintained right through the World Cup that he expected India to go all the way. There was genuine delight in his voice when TOI reached him over telephone.
"It was a wonderful and exciting win by the Indian team that cements their reputation as the best team in the world currently," he gushed.
He refused to talk about individual performances, but had a special word of praise for skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "The World Cup win was a real team effort with so many contributing but I really think the glue that held it together was Dhoni's cool and calm captaincy," he stated.
But there was more to come from Guru Greg. On Monday, Sachin Tendulkar went on record saying that Dhoni is the best Indian captain he has played under. Greg went one step further, saying: "In my view he is the best captain in world cricket at present. His cricket instincts are very good and he has the confidence in himself to back his judgment. Considering the risk, his decision to bat at No 5 in the final was very courageous but he backed the decision with a commanding innings that ensured the win for his team."

He also wished the Indian team well and hoped that the Men in Blue would carry on the good work. "With the wealth of talent around the team at the moment, India should be able to remain on top for some time to come," he added.
Asked about Australia's new captain Michael Clarke, Greg said: "Clarke will be fine. I think he will be a very good leader. He is not the person that the media portrays and he has a natural inclination to attack which will be an asset."
