LG Optimus G2 to run on Snapdragon 800 processor, reveal benchmark scores

Benchmark leaks have become unofficial sources which sometimes give us roughly accurate information about the hardware specifications of upcoming smartphones and tablets. Another addition to this source of information is the hardware powering the LG Optimus G2, a successor to the recently launched Optimus G.

The information about the G2 comes from GLBenchmark, which suggest that smartphone will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. The specifications hint that the LG Optimus G2 D801 sports a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor, 2GB RAM and the Adreno 330 GPU. It will house a full HD 1920x1080 pixel display. The size of the display is still unknown. Straight out of the box, the device will run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. It is also expected to house a 13MP rear-facing camera and a front-facing camera for video chatting.

The leaked information also suggests that the G2 will come to the US via T-Mobile.

In India, LG hasn’t been able to grab a stellar market share when it comes to the flagship smartphones. It recently launched the LG Optimus G, which we think is a fantastic device despite its few shortcomings. We have also seen HTC’s flagship smartphone, the Butterfly launch in India and boast of the Snapdragon 600 chipset. One version of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 will also be powered by the Snapdragon 600 chipset where as another model will be powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa chipset.

What remains to be seen is what added features does LG bring to the table with the Optimus G2 considering the fact that every manufacturer is gunning for the best specifications under the hood.

DARK: New trailer reveals vampire powers

Dark is an upcoming stealth and action RPG game that puts you in the shoes of Eric Bane, a vampire. A new gameplay trailer showcasing the abilities Bane wields has just been released and it looks rather good.

The video reveals several abilities range from Shadow Leap, which enables protagonist Eric Bane to leap across short distances in puffs of smoke and the night vision-like Auspex to Shadow Kill and Shadow Grip . The names are pretty self-explanatory, so we don’t really have to get into that. There’s plenty of room for stealth and plain murder. Then there’s domination, which allows Eric to mind control enemies. The icing on the cake, though, happens to be the finishing moves that Eric Bane has been blessed with. We sense a little bit of Mortal Kombat meets Vampire fanaticism.

The game is being developed by Realmforge Studios and being published by Kalypso Media. It is slated for release sometime later this year, but it will only be making an appearance on the Xbox 360 and PC. Currently, the status of a PS3 version of the game is unknown.

Google Play Movies added to India store

Google’s Play Store isn’t about just music any more. The latest addition to the offering is the Google Play Movies feature. Users will now be able to download or rent movies, directly on their devices, in High Definition or Standard Definition versions. This is the latest feature to be bolted on to the Play Store offering for India, after the Books store and the sale of Nexus devices directly - the Nexus 7 tablet being the first offering.

From what we understand, there are relatively recent movies available on the Store, across the Bollywood and Hollywood genres. Examples of them being – Argo, Ek Tha Tiger, Total Recall, The Amazing Spiderman and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The pricing is not uniform throughout, neither for renting the movie or for buying it outright. For example, Ek Tha Tiger is available to rent for Rs. 100 (SD version) and Rs. 150 (HD version), and can be purchased for Rs. 490 (SD version) and Rs. 590 (HD version). Alternatively, the movie Ted can be rented for Rs. 126 (SD version) and Rs. 157 (HD version), or can be purchased for Rs. 490 (SD version) and Rs. 650 (HD version). There is differential pricing even between two movies from the same genre.

If you are renting a movie, you can start watching the movie anytime within 30 days of clicking on “Rent”, but once you do start watching it, you will have to finish viewing it within the next 48 hours.

What is slightly more confusing is the differential offering across movies. Some movies are only available for download with no rent option, and some only have the rent option and you cannot buy them still. For example, you can only buy The Bourne Legacy for Rs. 490 (SD version) and Rs. 650 (HD version), with no rent option. If, however, you wish to watch The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, you can only rent it for Rs 120 (SD version) and Rs 150 (HD version), but there is no option of buying it yet.

While there seems to be a fairly good collection of the recent and popular Hollywood movies, Bollywood movie collection still needs a fair amount of work.

Google has launched this service in India after Apple, which launched the iTunes store in India and certain other countries recently. But, from what we have seen, the iTunes store definitely had an advantage in terms of the variety in the Library of Bollywood movies, but Google Play Movies seems to have more of the recent Hollywood stuff available at launch time. Everything said and done, your preference will be dictated with which device you own.

Nexus 7 launched in India via Google Play store at Rs. 15,999

Last month, we had reported that as Asus launched a slew of their own products for the Indian market, the coveted Google Nexus 7 was held off for a later date. Well, that day has arrived, as the Google Nexus 7 has officially graced the Indian Google Play store.

Besides the tablet becoming available, what’s even more interesting is that it is being sold through Google’s Play store. Currently, the tablet bears a price tag of Rs.15,999 for the 16GB version of the Nexus 7 and the expected shipping date is set to April 5.

The Nexus 7 has a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, making it one of the highest on a 7-inch tablet. The tablet lacks 3G capabilities, but does come with built-in Wi-Fi. The great thing about the Nexus 7 is that it is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and 1GB of RAM, pegging it almost just as powerful as most 10-inch counterparts.

While it is great that the Indian consumer has the choice of one additional 7-inch tablet, what’s even better is the new trend that could be sweeping in. Google could start selling their hardware through the Play store in India, like they have been doing in the US. Could this mean that we will start seeing Google also sell the Nexus phones to the Indian audience through the Play store? Could Google finally do away with the middleman and have their phones and tablets make their way to the Indian market?

Apple's iOS 6.1.3 update nullifies jailbreaks, still can't fix security flaw

Apple’s latest update for iOS devices marked v6.1.3 was recently issued to fix a security flaw that let hackers unlock an iPhone without entering the security code by pressing a series of keys and buttons in a particular order. However, now reports are filtering in that the update hasn’t been able to plug the vulnerability completely and the number key lock on an iPhone can still be bypassed through a new process. If that wasn’t bad enough (at least for iPhone users), the iOS 6.1.3 update has also made the popular evasi0n jailbreak method obsolete at least for Apple devices launched after (and including) the iPad 2.

The new method to bypass the key lock on the iPhone was first demonstrated by a YouTube user and later confirmed by a bunch of tech bloggers. Apple has yet to acknowledge this new development and considering the fact that it took a month to release an update for the initial flaw, we don’t even want to guess how long it will take now.

According to a post on Redmond Pie, while devices launched after the iPad 2 cannot be jailbroken for the time being after being updated to the new version, the update can be rolled back on devices launched before the iPad 2. However, the post points out that the jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 is of the tethered variety and will require you to connect your device, if you want to reboot it.

A new entry-level Android 4.0 ICS smartphone has been launched by Karbonn Mobiles, called the Karbonn A6, which for now is available exclusively from Snapdeal.com, with a delivery time of four business days.

Priced at Rs. 5,390, the Karbonn A6 is a dual-SIM Android smartphone, and sports a 4-inch (800x480 pixel) IPS display. It is powered by a 1GHz processor coupled with 512MB of RAM. The Karbonn A6 does not feature 3G capabilities, though it does offers GPRS/EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM radio, 3.5mm jack, and microUSB connectivity.

Other features of the Karbonn A6 include a 5MP rear camera with flash, a VGA front-facing camera, 104MB of built-in storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 32GB). The Karbonn A6 will be making its way into a very competitive budget Android smartphone market, but seems to feature some rather decent specifications at its price, especially the 4-inch IPS display, 512MB of RAM, a relatively recent Android OS version, and a 5MP rear camera. We’ll have to see how it does when it hits the retail market.

Nimbuzz goes past 150 million users; Asia accounts for over 60% of user base

Instant messaging platform Nimbuzz has announced its global subscriber base has now gone past 150 million in 200 countries. Nimbuzz reveals more than 60 percent of its user base comes from Asia.

"The company now boasts more than 37 million users in the Middle East and over 41 million in Rest of Asia including India," Nimbuzz said in a release.

Nimbuzz says it has seen a 100 percent year-over-growth with the platform now supporting more than 5,000 devices. According to Nimbuzz, more than 1 billion minutes of Nimbuzz P2P, NimbuzzOut and SIP calls are made per month, while over 102 billion messages are sent and received per month. Android accounts for over 35 percent of all active and new users.

Nimbuzz launched in 2006 had reached 50 million users in August 2011, and 100 million in August 2012. Nimbuzz’s growth figures are quite impressive, given it faces a strong competition from the likes WhatsApp, Groupme and ChatOn. Availability on a wide range of platform such as BlackBerry 10, iOS, Symbian, Windows Phone, Android, J2ME and even for PC has evidently helped the platform grow.

In a recent interview with Digit, Nimbuzz CEO Vikas Saxena had revealed Nimbuzz had seen a significant growth after launching on the Android platform. “Since we released Nimbuzz for the Android platform, we have seen incredible sustained growth, both in India, as well as other mobile markets around the world – this growth is a direct result of the need and demand for a universal (cross-platform) communications solution. People need to communicate and need to do so in the easiest, most collaborative way possible. As smartphones and data plans continue to gain momentum in emerging markets, we expect to see this growth continue,” said Vikas Saxena.

He also revealed partnership with Indian carriers also helped the platform grow. “Unlike many of our competitors, Nimbuzz currently holds partnerships with all of the major carriers throughout India, including Aircel, Airtel, Tata DOCOMO, Idea Cellular and other global carriers like Telcomsel, and Smartfen. Through these partnerships, Nimbuzz has become a powerful channel for revenue supplementation, providing carriers with both ad & data revenue,” added Vikas Saxena.

WhatsApp now available on BlackBerry 10 platform

In what is good news for probably a lot of users, BlackBerry has announced that the popular instant messaging application, WhatsApp, is now available on the platform. This is very much in line with the company’s communication towards the end of the previous week, which confirmed that the application will be arriving on BB10 this week.

BlackBerry has always been about bringing people together in a way that is fast, reliable and impactful. WhatsApp is a highly anticipated mobile messaging app that connects users to their contacts on several platforms, and we are pleased to work with WhatsApp to bring their service to our customers.” said Martyn Mallick, VP Global Alliances and Business Development at BlackBerry.

“BlackBerry has been a great platform for WhatsApp for many years. Delivering WhatsApp on BlackBerry 10 devices is in line with our goals of ensuring that our customers around the world can continue to communicate with the most important people in their lives.” said WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton.

The application is available as a free download on BlackBerry World app store, and the app developers are offering this service free for a year. On the completion of one year, the service will be chargeable at Rs 55 per year. Like its siblings on Android and iOS, the BB10 version of WhatsApp uses the data connection to send and receive messages. The BB10 version has the complete set of notifications, and full integration with BlackBerry Contacts. What seems to be missing is the integration in the BlackBerry Hub, but that would be nitpicking!

Twitter archive download option available in Hindi, 11 other languages

Twitter now allows users to download their archives (tweets and retweets) in 12 other languages other than English, namely Hindi, Farsi, French, Hebrew, German, Spanish, Dutch, Malaysian, Norwegian, Finnish, Hungarian and Polish languages.

Twitter had introduced the archiving tool, also known as Your Twitter archive, in December 2012. The tool allows users to download all their posts and retweets. But, it only supported the English language then.

Twitter has been trying to increase user engagement and use of the platform beyond English-only users with various local and custom features. Twitter recently added 'ad support' for the Middle East and North Africa among other regions, revealing its usage had grown threefold in that part of the world in 2012.

If you plan to download your Archives, here's what your need to do. Go to the Settings, search for the “Your Twitter archive” feature. Clicking on the link, you will be given a link to download a ZIP file of your tweet archive by e-mail.

Sony PlayStation 3 becomes more colourful; with three new variants

Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3), one of the few popular gaming consoles in the market, has just released in three new colours.

After being available in “Charcoal Black” since its launch, the 500 GB console will now be available in “Classic White”, “Garnet Red” and “Azurite Blue” colours.

Not only are the console units coloured, but the DualShock controllers will also be of the corresponding colour, matching the body of the console unit.

All the three colour variants are based on the slim PS3 model which was released some time back. They have a curved body and smooth edges along with a sliding disk cover at the top. The top sliding cover has nice horizontal texture lines to it and the sides of the console are smooth and glossy.

The best part about the slim version is that it allows users to place the console unit anywhere they may want to place it in their homes without running into too much trouble with space.

These new coloured models can be purchased from retail stores at Rs. 23,490 which Sony claims is a special price for the summer holiday season. However, Sony is also quoted saying that this new and slim PS3 model is not compatible with PlayStation 2 games.

But we think that, as the crop of next generation consoles, that is the PlayStation 4 from Sony (controller, eyecam and details revealed recently) and the Xbox 720 (name not confirmed) from Microsoft are about to be revealed soon, it doesn’t make much sense to go out and buy the older consoles considering they have been in the market for so many years now. Be advised that the PS4 as well as the Xbox 720 won’t come cheap and are sure to cost a bomb, at least when they launch later this year.

Over 3 mln tablets sold in 2012; Micromax, Samsung in the lead: Report

More than 3 million tablets were sold in 2012 with more than 1 million shipped in the last quarter of the year, reveals the latest report by Cyber Media Research (CMR). Android dominated as the top operating system following by iOS and Windows. Moreover, Micromax and Samsung emerge as the top vendors in India, says the CMR report.

To be precise, as many as 3.11 million units were sold in 2012, while 1.09 million units were sold in the October-December 2012 period, which accounted for 35.33 percent of the total shipments for the entire year.

“The year 2012 and particularly the last two quarters (3Q 2012 and 4Q 2012) were significant for the India Tablets market. We have seen the market for these devices grow substantially in 2012, particularly in the second half which made up for over 70% of the total sales,” says Faisal Kawoosa, Lead Telecoms Analyst, CMR.

Emergence of Phablets

The Cyber Media research also points out the emergence of the 'Phablet' segment. According to the report, phablets constituted around 16.5 percent of the total sales and this trend is expected to strengthen in the coming quarters. Moreover, the user profiles, market dynamics and the product orientation of ‘phablets’ are very different from that of tablets. In the light of these trends, CMR has decided to reclassify the Tablets market into two separate segments – Phablets and Tablets – starting CY 2013.

Commenting on this decision, Kawoosa stated, “At CMR we used to consider Tablet as a device with screen size of 5-inch or larger. But, with the definite emergence of ‘Phablets’ as a sustainable form factor in its own right, we will now consider only devices of 7-inch screen size and above as Tablets for the purpose of market analysis. Other parameters of the CMR definition of Tablet devices will remain unchanged. Moreover, we will continue to track and report ‘Phablets’ as a separate category of mobile device in the hands of individual consumers and enterprise users.”

Micromax, Samsung dominate the tablet market

According to the report, the Indian manufacturer Micromax emerged the top vendor for the 'tablets with 7-inch screen and above screen-size'. Apple and Samsung stood at the second and third position respectively, in 2012

For the fourth quarter of 2012, Micromax, Karbonn and DataWind emerged as the top three tablet vendors in India.

“Samsung has been able to maintain the lead in the market only because of the first-mover advantage with the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Note II. But this is not a sustainable strategy in the long term, as it has resulted in creation of the new ‘Phablet’ form factor, attracting competitors at both ends of the price spectrum to follow suit. With the entrance of Apple at the top end and multiple Chinese and Indian players at the entry-level, the Phablet segment is only going to see increased competition in the foreseeable future,” says Tarun Pathak, Telecoms Analyst, CMR.

“This is also proved if we look at the same market with the new perspective of ‘Phablets’ being a separate and distinct category, based on the revised CMR definition for Tablets starting CY 2013. The market rankings for CY 2012 and change altogether with Samsung witnessing a major change in its standing. So if Samsung has to be a strong brand in the Tablet market, it has to adopt a long term sustainable strategy along with nurturing the ‘Phablets’”, concluded Tarun.

Check out the complete CMR study here.

Samsung Galaxy S IV 'Eye Scroll': Killer feature or avoidable gimmick?

The Samsung Galaxy S IV may have a new feature at launch that may change the way users read content on phones. The New York Times reports that the feature titled 'Eye Scroll' will help users scroll through content on the phone display using only their eyes. According to an unnamed Samsung executive who spoke to The New York Times, the Galaxy S IV’s front camera will track the user’s eyeballs and will scroll the page to the next paragraph once the user reaches the bottom of the page.

Samsung has already filed a trademark for the term 'Eye Scroll' and the NYT further states that Samsung has also trademarked the term 'Eye Pause', although there’s no clarity regarding what the second term designates. Eye Scroll underscores Samsung’s point of having software drive the popularity of the Galaxy S IV rather than just the hardware.

Although, we have only limited details about the Eye Scroll feature, it really does sound similar to the “Smart Stay” feature that was introduced with the Galaxy S III. Turning Smart Stay on would get the front camera to track the user’s eyeballs and keep the phone’s display on as long as the user was looking at it. However, users haven’t warmed up to the feature mainly because of its inconsistent performance and feature limitations. Now, if Eye Scroll doesn’t want to become a feature that’s forgotten within a month of buying the device (like Smart Stay or Siri on the iPhone), Samsung will have to address all the issues that frustrated Galaxy S III users.

One of the biggest limitations with Smart Stay which even the application admits when switching it on is that it doesn’t work in sub-par lighting conditions. Since it’s difficult to guarantee perfect lighting conditions all the time, Eye Scroll should be able to work in less than normal light. While we understand that it’ll be difficult to get the feature to work in a pitch dark room, it should at least be able to do so in slightly darkened environments.

Another problem with Smart Stay which could also make its way to 'Eye Scroll' is that it’s extremely inconsistent when used by bespectacled people. Users have complained on forums that when they’re wearing glasses, Smart Stay has trouble making out if they’re still looking at the display. Considering the fact that there are a lot of people out there who wear glasses, Samsung absolutely should look at fixing this issue.
Users have also complained about inconsistent performance from the Smart Stay feature where it doesn’t acknowledge the fact that the user may be looking at the display from a slight angle or even when looking at it straight, the display still turns off. Considering the fact that Eye Scroll sounds like it is powered by the same technology that powers the “Smart Stay” feature, we believe that it’s highly likely that Eye Scroll could suffer from the same drawbacks.

Must-Have Feature or Gimmick?

At the end of the day, irrespective of how faulty or great Eye Scroll may turn out to be, we have to question whether it’s really a feature worth having. Sure, it could be a great bonus feature to have and it could end up as neat as the “Multi-Window” and “Video Pop-Up” features that Samsung has introduced in its Galaxy smartphones. But a bonus feature isn’t the same as an essential feature and Eye Scroll doesn’t sound essential.

However, as good as Samsung’s focus on software has been, we wish that it would actually turn its focus on some other things that limit the appeal of its flagship Galaxy phones. The plastic body is one big complaint we have and in spite of how the Galaxy S III looks, its plastic body feels incongruous on a premium device. The Samsung Galaxy S III’s battery-life has also come under the scanner and we assume that a feature like Smart Stay or Eye Scroll will use up valuable battery-life. Finally, Samsung will really have to step up its game with regards to camera performance, since we now have some tremendous cameras on phones today (see: iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 920). We really do hope that Samsung addresses these issues before spending resources on a “nice to have but not really needed” feature like Eye Scroll.
