Microsoft releases Windows Phone 8 Companion app

With Windows Phone 8 being under 24 hours away from being officially announced, Microsoft has released the long promised Companion app, which would allow the new devices to sync with any Windows 8 device (PC or RT Tablet). The app is supposed to allow syncing of music, photos other media seamlessly from the Windows 8 device onto the phone, much the same way it worked on the Zune desktop client.

Microsoft had long discontinued their Zune Music Player, but the desktop software for the same became the iTunes counterpart for syncing to Windows Phone 7 devices. However, for the newer Windows Phones 8 coming out, the desktop software has been made redundant.

The Companion app should be able to do everything the Zune Desktop does, but without being a separate software as such. Unfortunately, just like the existing Windows Phone 7 devices won’t be upgraded to the Windows Phone 8 OS, the Companion app too is only compatible with the new phones and won’t work with Windows Phone 7 (or 7.5 or 7.8).

Microsoft has been garnering a lot of attention lately, with their new OS Windows 8 and Surface RT being officially launched. The next wave of products from the Redmond Company is the Windows Phone 8, which would complete the Windows 8 family of products.

Phone makers like Nokia, HTC and Samsung have already announced their Windows Phone 8. While HTC and Samsung’s stake in the Windows Phone 8 devices isn’t that crucial, Nokia’s future entirely banks of the success of the new phones are an instant hit with the people.

Apple posts 'apology' to Samsung on U.K. website

As required by a U.K. court, Apple has posted a notice on its website that says Samsung did not copy Cupertino with its Galaxy lineup of tablets and smartphones. Well, sort of.

In the notice, accessible via the "Samsung/Apple UK judgement" link on apple.co.uk, Apple acknowledges that the High Court of Justice of England and Wales found that that Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe on Apple's design patent for the iPad.

But those hoping for a mea culpa from Cupertino shouldn't hold their breath. Apple goes on to toot its own horn and highlight the parts of the judge's ruling that criticize Samsung's tablets - particularly that bit about how the Galaxy Tab lineup is "not as cool" as the iPad.

"The extreme simplicity of the Apple design is striking," the judge wrote. The Galaxy Tabs, though, "do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design."

Apple concludes by pointing out that judges in Germany and the U.S. have ruled in Apple's favor on patent infringement cases involving Samsung.

Apple did not pen this note out the goodness of its heart, of course. In July, Judge Colin Birss of the High Court ordered Apple to post a note on its website and publish an ad in magazines and newspapers to say that Samsung did not rip off Apple when it designed its tablets. Not surprisingly, Apple was not pleased and appealed the decision, so its public apology was delayed. But the U.K.'s Court of Appeals last week upheld the lower court's decision. Apple has apparently decided not to take the issue to the U.K. Supreme Court, and posted the notice.

The full notice is below. Also check out PCMag's roundup of Apple's Most Notable Apologies.

Samsung / Apple UK judgment

On 9th July 2012 the High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled that Samsung Electronic (UK) Limited's Galaxy Tablet Computer, namely the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe Apple's registered design No. 0000181607-0001. A copy of the full judgment of the High court is available on the following link www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Patents/2012/1882.html.

In the ruling, the judge made several important points comparing the designs of the Apple and Samsung products:

"The extreme simplicity of the Apple design is striking. Overall it has undecorated flat surfaces with a plate of glass on the front all the way out to a very thin rim and a blank back. There is a crisp edge around the rim and a combination of curves, both at the corners and the sides. The design looks like an object the informed user would want to pick up and hold. It is an understated, smooth and simple product. It is a cool design."

"The informed user's overall impression of each of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets is the following. From the front they belong to the family which includes the Apple design; but the Samsung products are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back. They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool."

That Judgment has effect throughout the European Union and was upheld by the Court of Appeal on 18 October 2012. A copy of the Court of Appeal's judgment is available on the following link www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2012/1339.html. There is no injunction in respect of the registered design in force anywhere in Europe.

However, in a case tried in Germany regarding the same patent, the court found that Samsung engaged in unfair competition by copying the iPad design. A U.S. jury also found Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple's design and utility patents, awarding over one billion U.S. dollars in damages to Apple Inc. So while the U.K. court did not find Samsung guilty of infringement, other courts have recognized that in the course of creating its Galaxy tablet, Samsung willfully copied Apple's far more popular iPad.

Hands on with the Apple iPad (4th Generation)

Well, that was fast. After only six months, Apple has replaced the third-generation iPad with a new fourth-gen tablet, which is pretty much what the third-gen model should have been in the first place.

The new unit looks just like the old one. It's the same size and the same weight—I put two next to each other and they were difficult to tell apart except for the new Lightning port on the fourth-gen iPad's bottom edge.

The new iPad doesn't need a smaller docking port—in fact, you could argue for a larger plug that's better able to keep it in place in a dock —but Apple's switching all of its iOS devices over to Lightning right now.
The difference is inside, in performance. The third-gen iPad had the odd A5X chip, which boosted the device's GPU without accelerating its CPU at all over the iPad 2. The new iPad has an A6X, which appears to use the brand-new, Apple-designed processor found in Apple's iPhone 5.

That means faster performance. I ran the browser benchmark Browsermark on the new iPad and got a score of 200,333. Compare that to the 126,886 on the previous iPad, and the 191,158 on the iPhone 5, and you see that we may have a significantly faster Web browsing experience here.

Apple also boosted the Wi-Fi speeds (invisible) and is offering it on more LTE networks, including Sprint's (also invisible). The front camera has been upgraded to 1.2 megapixels. So you get the idea—what we have here is a completely familiar iPad with the same gorgeous high-res Retina screen and 275,000 apps, just faster and a bit better specced.

The new model rusticates the third-gen model, making it look like the formerly new iPad was a stopgap in Apple's cadence of annual releases; perhaps the company was waiting for the A6 to be ready, but needed an iPad for its traditional spring unveiling. Fortunately for third-gen iPad owners, "better performance" is much less visible than "gorgeous Retina screen," and with the iPad mini now in the running, developers will still be making sure their apps run well on A5 processors.

In other words, I didn't see a huge difference between the fourth-gen iPad experience and that of third-gen iPad here at Apple's event. That will change over time. The difference will be huge for people able to get the iPad on Sprint LTE, of course, and I suspect the faster Wi-Fi and faster processor will combine to create a notably faster Web-browsing experience. But we'll have to see that when we do our full review.

Another New Apple iPad: The latest Apple iPad looks a lot like the last Apple iPad (a.k.a. the New Apple iPad), which was released mere months ago, and is now discontinued. The changes are mostly internal: a much faster processor, more 4G carriers, and a better front camera.

Apple iPad (4th Generation): Side - Apple didn't mess with the design of its successful 9.7-inch iPad. It's still 0.37 inches thick and works with existing cases and covers.

Apple iPad (4th Generation): Lightning Connector - Apple replaced the older 30-pin dock connector with the new, smaller Lightning port. The iPad doesn't need to save the space, but Apple needs to nurture a world of Lightning accessories.

New (3rd-Gen) Apple iPad and Apple iPad (4th Generation): The third-generation iPad (at left) is no more. It's been replaced by the nearly identical, but more powerful fourth-generation unit (at right).

New (3rd-Gen) Apple iPad and Apple iPad (4th Generation): Edges - The New Apple iPad (now discontinued) and the Apple iPad (4th Generation) seem thin until you compare them to the iPad mini. They're still very handsome tablets.

New (3rd-Gen) Apple iPad and Apple iPad (4th Generation): Backs - Around back, the difference between these two iPads is just that our third-generation iPad is a cellular model, with the plastic antenna covers.

Apple iPad (4th Generation): Benchmark - This result probably isn't valid, as it comes from an iPad that was being manhandled during the benchmark. But even with all that going on, its Web browsing performance beat the third-generation iPad (which scored 126,886) and the iPhone 5 (which scores around 191,000).

Zuckerberg reveals Microsoft was his backup plan, if Facebook had failed

Speaking at Stanford University, Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that if his website had failed to pick up, he’d have gone over to Microsoft to work as an engineer. What’s not clear is whether he already had an offer or had hoped that the Redmond giant would hire him.

Zuckerberg did bring up the Harvard connection though, as a lot of Harvard graduates want to work for Microsoft. It could also be the fact that both Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg were Harvard dropouts.

Zuckerberg took the opportunity to address many issues, including rumours that he was against ads in the nascent stages of Facebook. He said he in fact was all for them as the revenue would have helped purchase more servers, as he was obsessed with making sure the social networking site never experienced downtime. More servers also meant that the website could expand the social net it cast, allowing more user sign-ups which eventually led to the site crossing the billion users mark.

Zuckerberg also shared with the audience that the programmers at Facebook considered releasing a course catalog to using the social networking site, especially the sections pertinent to privacy.

Given how important online privacy has become, a guide to using these features of Facebook would have been extremely useful. Whether such a document will be released or not isn’t clear, but we can only hope that it sees the light of day.

Apple sued over deal locking iPhone to AT&T network

A pair of iPhone owners are suing Apple to get their handsets unlocked.

Zach Ward and Thomas Buchar filed a putative class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Northern California on Friday alleging that the tech giant violated antitrust laws by locking iPhone buyers into voice and data contracts with AT&T Mobility. The plaintiffs claim that Apple violated the Sherman Act's prohibition on monopolization by not obtaining consumers' contractual consent to have their iPhones locked when the tech giant entered into a five-year exclusivity agreement with the wireless carrier in 2007.

To enforce the terms of its agreement, Apple installed software locks on the iPhone that prevented buyers from taking their devices to a competing wireless carrier, the lawsuit claims. That activity violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which includes an exception that allows handset owners to modify their phones for use on the wireless network of their choice, the plaintiffs said.

"Through these actions, Apple has unlawfully stifled competition, reduced output and consumer choice, and artificially increased prices in the aftermarkets for iPhone voice and data services," plaintiffs said in their lawsuit (see below).

In addition to monetary damages, the lawsuit seeks an order restraining Apple from programming iPhones in such a way that would prevent consumers from unlocking their SIM cards. The plaintiffs also want Apple to provide SIM unlock codes to iPhone owners on request, as well as an order preventing Apple from selling iPhones without adequately disclosing that the handsets are locked and obtaining consumers' contractual consent for that arrangement.

Consumer frustration over handset software locks installed by wireless operators is nothing new, but previous lawsuits against wireless carriers over the issue have failed thanks to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2011 that found consumers no longer have the right to file class action lawsuits against wireless carriers. In AT&T vs. Concepcion (PDF), the court ruled that a clause in the carrier's customer contract limiting consumers to arbitration instead of class action met the basic standards of fairness.

However, this lawsuit takes a different tack, pursuing the handset maker rather than the wireless carrier. Whether Apple has a similar clause in its customer contract wasn't immediately clear.

CNET has contacted Apple for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

Spice partners with Huawei to offer co-branded handsets

The Spice Group has partnered with Chinese telecommunications giant, Huawei, to offer co-branded handsets across the company’s markets – which include India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and some parts of Africa.

The Spice Huawei handsets will be branded ‘S Huawei’, and the duo is expected to launch 7 to 10 handsets in the near future. The first product under the partnership was the Ascend Y 100. The two companies would spend equal amounts on marketing. Spice would provide the retail space, while Huawei will provide R&D and manufacturing.

The Spice Group also announced it plans to sell 10 million handsets globally by June 2013, a figure which includes 7.5 million 2G handsets, and Huawei’s handsets. According to the company, roughly 50 percent of its revenues come from its international markets.

Spice also said it intends to expand its global footprint, from 1,250 stores to 5,000. Spice has also tied up with select operators to offer bundled 3G data plans, such as Airtel, Aircel, and Tata Docomo.

Facebook's user base in India grows to 65 million

Facebook has announced its user base in India has grown to 65 million users, from just 8 million in 2010 - a growth that has made it an essential market for the company today, competing with Brazil and Indonesia for the number two spot.

As of August 2012, the user base was around 50 million, suggesting a rapid growth of the social networking website in rural and urban parts of the country.

According to Head of Facebook India Kirthiga Reddy, companies have increased their expenditure on online advertisements, which is now growing at 25 percent year-on-year. “Our reach can be a strong platform for marketers,” she told the media after inauguration of the company's refurbished office in Hyderabad.

She further revealed that top brands across the sectors in the country were using Facebook to engage with their customers. Moreover, Facebook is now aiming at the small and medium companies, for which the network recently teamed up with industry body FICCI.

“We are interacting with SMEs through the industry body on how they can build a presence on Facebook and engage with their customers,” Kirthiga said.

With an increasing Internet population, including the smartphone users, in India, Facebook is expected to post growth at the same pace in the near future. However, sustaining the growth will not be that easy.

As WSJ in its report points out, the social networking website has cater to millions of Indians still using the feature and low-tech phones. Moreover, it has to make its platform more accessible to the local developers to boost its ecosystem. If Facebook's model succeeds in India, it could apply same in other emerging markets such as Indonesia and Brazil.

“As we think about how to deliver the best possible Facebook experience to an emerging-market customer, India is probably the best place to incubate and experiment on different ways we can deliver that experience," WSJ quotes Meenal Balar, Facebook's director for international growth as saying.

That being said, Facebook has definitely taken a lot of measures to make its services popular in the country. It recently rolled out support for Hindi and seven other Indian languages for its feature phone app. Moreover, it is currently running a scheme under which it is offering Rs. 50 talktime for new users signing up via mobile phone. Read more about the Facebook scheme here.

YouTube pay-per-view services coming to India soon: Report

Google is planning to launch a YouTube pay-per-view services for users in India. The move is likely to help the film industry cope with the piracy and give consumers a wider range for viewing movies or other videos. Google's pay-per-view services are already available in multiple countries such as Australia, Korea and Japan.

“Our pay-per-view services or ‘rental’ model is a natural step here in India for the partners that we are working with. For instance, Eros Entertainment who has been with us for a long time already has a lot of content up on YouTube,” The Hindu quotes Gautam Anand, Director Content Partnerships, Google Asia Pacific as saying.

“Once we have the functionality in, it will be done. There are many Indian media companies which are interested,” he added.

YouTube's rental model includes a one-time fee to stream the movie for a limited period of time. Google, however, pointed out its main concern is the payment mechanism. “The major roadblock, which we are working on, is the payment mechanism – enabling carrier billing for example. We want to be able to ensure a seamless experience. Once this is done it will happen.”

Google's official also hinted at the company's growing focus on the regional content. According to Mr. Anand, regional channels in India have the potential to be converted into YouTube content, considering the fact that about 33 per cent of television content broadcast in regional languages.

Google has already its YouTube Box Office services in India. The YouTube BoxOffice features various Indian movies which users can watch for free.

In India, there are very few options for online video rental services right now such as BigFlix. Telecom operator Airtel in coordination with Bigflix last year launched Airtel Movies for computers/laptops and other devices over ethernet/Wi-Fi.

LinkedIn rolls out new profile design

LinkedIn on Tuesday started rolling out a revamped design for its profiles and said redesign will make it easier for users build a professional identity. The updated LinkedIn user profile is available immediately for English-language users, and will be rolled out for all users over the next few months.

Addressing a media presentation at LinkedIn headquarters, the engineering team of the professional networking website said the new profiles come with several enhancements and new features. Some of the notable enhancements are in-line editing, sidebar for adding profile sections, high resolution images and drag and drop profile sections, to sort according to users' preferences.

LinkedIn also added a new feature for users that allow them to follow world's 'most respected thought leaders' on the site. The company says the new “follow” mechanism allows users to keep up with select group of individuals, a “natural extension" of existing tools for following news feeds and organisations. The company ruled out possibilities of monetising the new feature.

"The ability to follow thought leaders on LinkedIn allows members to engage directly in professional conversations with influencers, comment directly on professionally relevant topics, and share them with their peers," LinkedIn said.

"For our influencers who will be regularly posting content and updates, LinkedIn offers the ability to reach the largest network of professionals around the world and be able to have professionally relevant conversations with them."

The revamped profile redesign is quite reminiscent of the Facebook profile, though LinkedIn clarifies it has making efforts to simplify the website for some time, and that similarities to larger social networking were due to offering “the best experience for members”. “simplication efforts” have been

The redesigned LinkedIn also offers users better access to their professional connections via "rich and visual insights on the people and companies in your network," the company said. If you’d like to be one of the first ones to get the new LinkedIn Profile, you can sign up here

Government to set up a public-private joint working group on cyber security

Concerned by the increasing Internet-related security threats in the country, the Indian government has decided to involve the private sector in its initiative to bolster cyber security. Opening up the national security regime to the private sector, the government will set up a permanent joint working group for the purpose.

According to National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon, the government will be starting four pilot projects that will include establishing a testing laboratory, conducting a test audit, studying the vulnerabilities of the critical information infrastructure, and the setting up of a multi-disciplinary centre for excellence.

“The enormous potential for damage has made cyber security a major concern. There is no question that both the government and private sector need each other. The unique nature of this collaboration is because of the unique nature of the domain, and we need to develop the habit of working together that hasn’t existed in the past,” The Hindu quotes Shivshankar Menon as saying.

Commenting on the recent incidents of the misuse of social networking sites to spread hate campaigns against people from North East, Menon added, “We have seen the misuse of social media to affect communal harmony. The important thing is to create a virtuous circle of security while maintaining our democratic rights of freedom of speech and privacy.”

The JWG in its report titled ‘Recommendations of Joint Working Group on Engagement With Private Sector On Cyber Security’ suggested various recommendations on cyber security such as training law enforcement agencies in cyber crime investigation and forensics, making the public more aware about cyber security, and setting up an institute of cyber security professionals for testing and audit.

The new government initiative comes amid various reports suggesting a rise in cyber threats in the country. According to a Symantec report, cyber criminals are now targeting emerging cities such as Chandigarh, Mohali, Bhubaneswar, Surat and Jaipur. Experts believe factors such as lack of awareness about security measures have made people and organisations from such cities more vulnerable to such attacks.

A Norton report claims India suffered a massive $8 billion loss due to cyber crimes in 2011. The report says about 32 percent of Indian adults have been victims of cybercrime in the last year.

Just kidding! Rumor now tips Oct. 23 iPad Mini launch

Oct. 10 came and went without an iPad mini invitation, but the latest rumor suggests that Apple will actually unveil the much-hyped device on Oct. 23.

Citing "people familiar with Apple's plans," All Things D this morning said Apple will hold a press event on Tuesday, Oct. 23 to unveil the iPad mini. The blog has not yet confirmed a location, but speculated that the event will be held at Apple's Cupertino campus since the company already held a big press event in San Francisco for the iPhone 5 unveiling.

Apple has not yet made any announcements.

Earlier this month, a report from Fortune said Apple would send out iPad mini invitations on Oct. 10, hold its event on Oct. 17, and start selling the new device by Nov. 2. But by the time Wednesday afternoon rolled around, invites were nowhere in site, and Fortune issued a mea culpa.

"My source was a major Apple investor who had heard it from three different sources. They were wrong about the timing," reporter Philip Elmer-Dewitt wrote. "I was wrong to pass the tip along. I don't know what I was doing in the rumor business in the first place. Mea culpa."

When it comes to Apple event rumors, All Things D has been a pretty reliable source. In August, the blog correctly reported that Apple would not unveil the iPad mini at the September iPhone 5 event. iMore.com later predicted that the iPhone 5 would be unveiled on Sept. 12. Last year, meanwhile, ATD tipped the Oct. 4 iPhone 4S launch date and the change of venue from San Francisco to Apple's campus.

Oct. 23, meanwhile, puts the iPad mini launch just three days ahead of the Windows 8 release. On that date, the Microsoft Surface tablet as well as a number of other Windows 8-based tablets are expected to hit store shelves. Can they compete against a smaller and more affordable iPad? Stay tuned.

If you can't wait, check out PCMag's roundup of the top iPad mini alternatives below, as well as some supposedly leaked images of the iPad mini.

UPDATE: Jim Dalrymple and John Gruber, both considered to be in-the-know about all things Apple, have chimed in to seemingly confirm the Oct. 23 date. Dalrymple quoted the All Things D story and issued a simple "Yep" in response, while Gruber titled his blog post "Oct. 23" and wrote: "Looks like that's when Apple is going to unveil the smaller iPad."

Sony drops the mammoth 84-inch, 4K TV XBR-84X900 on Indian consumers

Another national first from Sony is the Bravia KD-X9000 TV. If you're wondering what's so special about this new Bravia, well, for starters, it measures a whopping 84-inches diagonally and if that wasn’t enough to impress you, it is also India's first TV to support 4K resolution.

The X9000 is the first 4K TV to hit the Indian markets and everything about it is just as impressive. The X9000 comes with Sony's proprietary X-Reality engine for the best viewing experience and it can also upscale HD content for clear viewing. The TV also supports 3D and surprisingly, Sony has gone the passive 3D route than the usual Active 3D. Passive 3D means not only thinner and lighter glasses, but also much cheaper glasses.

A TV this impressive also requires good sound, and for that, Sony has incorporated two tower speakers that mount right next to the TV itself. Each tower features a total of 10 drivers, including tweeters, woofers and sub-woofers. Totalling 50W, the front facing 2-way, 10 unit Live Speaker system directs sound right at you. Soft dome tweeters deliver crisp highs, partnered with mid-range units and sub-woofers for rich, solid bass powered by S-Force Front Surround.

We had some time to let our eye balls ogles this monstrous beauty and it is just as impressive as the specs make it sound. The content playing on the TV at the time was native 4K and the image was as sharp as it could possibly be. The colours, though mostly shades of brown, black and grey (it was a video of an orchestra performing), looked quite vivid and the contrast was very impressive.

Unfortunately, due to the venue being a hall with aa lot of ambient noise, we really couldn’t get a feel for the speakers, though standing even 30 feet away, the performance was decently audible.

Now all this is very impressive, but alas, its one of those good things that isn't really made for the masses. The price on this gorgeous slab of visual treat is a towering Rs. 16,99,900 and can be pre-ordered right now at select Sony Experience Stores with an expected ship date of sometime end of November.

Apple to launch iPhone 5 in India on October 26?

Apple's iPhone 5 is already available for sale in several markets, and is expected to hit the Indian shores soon. Though Apple hasn't announced a launch date yet, rumours on the web suggest the iPhone 5 will launch in India on October 26.

BGR India, citing multiple sources, claims, “Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 5 in India on the last Friday of this month, which happens to be October 26”. The site also reports Apple will be distributing its iPhone 5 on its own (via Apple Stores), instead of teaming up with the Indian carriers.

Rumours further suggest the iPhone 5 bear pricing similar or higher to the iPhone 4S (Rs. 44,500 for the 16GB model) pricing, when it launched it in India last year. It's notable the company has already slashed rates of its iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, setting stage for the launch of the iPhone 5.

Since there's no official confirmation the reports, we're taking this information with grain of salt right now. Apple Insider in its report, however, points out that the iPhone 5 “marks the quickest ever launch for an Apple product, becoming available in a total of 31 countries just two weeks after its release”. Apple aims to launch the iPhone in more than 100 countries with 240 carriers by December, adds the report.

Demand for the iPhone 5 in India is quite high with the device selling briskly in the grey market and via online shopping websites such as Ebay. However, the device is being sold at a hefty premium, with prices as high as Rs. 1,00,000 for the 64GB model.

Adobe updates Camera Raw and Lightroom; adds support for 22 new cameras

Adobe has today released the final versions of Lightroom 4.2 and Adobe Camera Raw 7.2 for public consumption. Finally some good news for the early adopters of the cameras that have been coming out recently.

Adobe Camera Raw 7.2 and Lightroom 4.2 add support for 21 new cameras not just limited to Canon or Nikon camps. The update also plays well with the Sony RX100 and the Fujifilm XF1 to name a few (the full list at the end of the article). While ACR 7.2 only adds RAW support, Lightroom also gets equipped with tethering support, the lack of which has been quite a bother for many of those who bought these cameras at the time of release. Tethering is great for many photographers as especially in a studio environment, where the camera doesn’t really need much moving. It also allows the photographer (or client) to view the shots immediately on a big screen. The lack of this ability has been severely impacting the workflow of many photographers and the support forums at Adobe have been over-loaded by the question of “when will the support be added?”
Along with RAW and tethering support, Lightroom also gets a bug fix for issues such as “The Navigator Panel in Map did not pan correctly” and the addition of roughly 45 new lens profile for chromatic aberration and distortion correction.
Well, the wait is over as the official 4.2 build of Lightroom can be downloaded directly from the Adobe website for Windows and Mac. The Adobe Camera Raw 7.2 can be downloaded directly from within Photoshop by going to “Help > Check for updates” as there is no direct way to download it from the website.
Added raw file support:
  • Canon EOS 650D / Rebel T4i
  • Canon EOS M
  • Fujifilm XF1
  • Fujifilm X-E1
  • Fuji FinePix F800EXR
  • Leaf Credo 40
  • Leaf Credo 60

  • Nikon Coolpix P7700
  • Nikon 1 J2
  • Panasonic DMC-G5

  • Pentax K-30
  • Samsung EX2F
  • Sony Alpha NEX-5R
  • Sony Alpha NEX-6
  • Sony Alpha SLT-A99V
  • Sony DSC-RX100
Added tethered capture support:

  • Nikon D800e
  • Canon EOS Kiss X5

  • Canon EOS 600D
  • Canon EOS Kiss X50
